A few  A few Maldon Club members are into Mountain Biking and two of us, I  (Mike Mott) & Simon Hurrell with a few friends ride most weeks at Danbury and Little Baddow.

Over the years we have raced at “Beastway” which was at the Eastway race circuit and is now at the new “Hog Hill” circuit with various successes (I have finished 3rd in the series in the  “Grand Vets” category twice). Other club members that raced there last year were Mark Hill and Rick Mathews- Rick did particularly well.

Last year also saw the “Mud, Sweat & Gears” race series commence and Simon and I did all three rounds of the 2 hour Enduro’s the first being at our regular haunt of Danbury but not on the trails we ride on, so we had no unfair advantage. The course was dry and fast with some decent drops, fast single track and a couple of climbs that made you question why you were not still in bed on a Sunday morning. We both thoroughly enjoyed the event and on reflection felt this was probably the best round of the three and it was won by our friend and ex Maldon club member Alex Dowsett.

Round 2 we were looking forward to as it was at Codham Park near Braintree and was being held on private land. Again the weather was nice and dry so fast tyres were put on and the bikes set up for fast and dry racing.  However, the course designer decided to send you along a stream which is fair enough as it is mountain biking after all but once the riders had passed through this several times it turned into a quagmire of 8” of mud that we could barely ride through and quite a lot of novice riders couldn’t and either had to get off or fall off!

Round 3 was at Langdon Hills and we recognised a few more Maldon Club faces, those being Sue and Gary Wood, we also spoke to a new member Russell Welch who finished an impressive11th on the day, well done Russ. The course again was different to the previous rounds and included some more lung bursting climbs and in my opinion was not as technical as the previous rounds.

Overall we enjoyed the series with Simon finishing 2nd and myself 5th in the Vets and we are looking forward to this years series as there will be six rounds with the inclusion of Tunstall Forest, Thetford Forest and Hylands Park.

These events are well worth a look whether you are a novice or a pro (ref Alex) and if you need any help or advice on Mountain Biking please contact me through the website or phone me on 07739 243154.
